Sharing

Groups

In addition to organising your personal research library and helping to write new papers, one of the key benefits of using Mendeley is the opportunities it offers for collaboration and discovery.

There are three types of groups in Mendeley:

  • Private Groups - designed to allow small teams to work together. The number of members is limited but allow the full text of reference materials (such as PDFs) to be shared between members. (Recommended for group project teams)
  • Invite-only groups - are publicly visible (they can be found by browsing or searching the Mendeley website), but can only be joined by users who are invited, or who apply and are approved by an administrator. It is good for sharing references or reading lists.
  • Open Groups - are totally public. They can be joined by anyone with a Mendeley account and any member can add new references to the group
  • Create Group

You can create a new group by clicking the "Create Group.." button in the left panel.

You can always edit your group settings using the "Edit Settings" button at the top of the main panel.

Adding materials to a group in Mendeley Desktop is very straightforward, just like how you use the folders. You just need to select the appropriate papers in your library and drag them and drop them onto the group entry in the left hand panel.

Always use the “Sync” button in Mendeley Desktop to save any changes you make. When you click "Sync" in Mendeley Desktop, your Mendeley library data will be securely stored on the Mendeley servers so you can access it on any machine anywhere you go. Notes and annotations made in groups will also be available to others after clicking "Sync".
